Liam Gallagher In Fashion
NOTORIOUS BUT LEGENDARY. APPLAUDED YET DESPISED
One of the most recognisable icons in modern British music. Known for his infamous public persona, tendencies to swear a lot and abrasive attitude towards well, anything. William John Paul Gallagher-better known as Liam Gallagher is the English musician, singer-songwriter and the former frontman of the band Oasis and currently of the band Beady Eye.
Already well and truly rooted in the public eye, Gallagher launched his Pretty Green Clothing Label on 4th June 2009. The british orientated brand is designed by Gallagher and seems to go from strength to strength in the industry, with awards under their belt such as the Drapers Fashion Award- Menswear Brand of the Year Award in 2010 in (and being nominated again for it this year) and Winner of Best Etail Marketing Initiative at the Drapers Etail Awards.
Nothing wild, man – just good clobber. It’s more about style than fashion” -Gallagher
Gallagher brands himself on his notorious behaviour and constant public feuds. Its this and his reputation throughout his career in the music industry, that the Pretty Green Label is built upon. The majority of Pretty Greens photo editorials, that are placed in stores and on the website are modeled by Gallagher himself – he remains central to everything the company does – ultimately Gallagher is the product.
As a representation of his personal style the label includes Gallaghers signature pieces— the parkas, desert boots and skinny scarves — this style has become increasingly popular in England with other celebrities especially musicians such as Alex Turner, from the Arctic Monkeys. Guys admire him for his talent in music and every girl loves a ‘bad lad’ image at heart and this is what consumers of the brand buy into.
“I don’t want just anybody wearing it” -Gallagher
His overall style is very much mod-influenced and as he describes it -“subtle”.
It was in the early 1960s when mod teens and young adults began using their money to buy stylish clothes, that boutique clothing stores opened in London on Carnaby Street and in the Kings Road districts- men’s fashion in particular was becoming more diverse. Maverick fashion designers emerged, such as John Stephen who produced the line named “His Clothes”. Clients of these designers included bands such as Small Faces, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Bee Gees and the Kinks.
Whenever Gallagher is snapped he always looks as though he has just strolled off Carnaby Street with his arms wide and swinging, in the midst of1969. Always seen with an upturned collar and skinny scarf around his neck, the former Oasis frontman would have fit in well alongside Brian Jones. (A founding member of The Rolling Stones.)
Paul Weller has recently done a range within the Pretty Green Label for Gallagher and is another definite influence on his style. When you look closely at the two or listen to what they say about clothes you can clearly see the countless overlaps between them.
Gallagher isn’t the type who aims to be seen in the front row of fashion shows and as he once put it, he’s “not Victoria Beckham.” Which makes it even more surprising really, how the cantankerous Manchester lad bears such a stereotypical Northern ‘Don’t care/laid back’ attitude, yet takes such pride in his appearance and pays so much attention to the details of his overall style- whether it be his hair or his high collars- that seem to always be either, zipped or button to the very top, or upturned and open but usually paired with a scarf.
Thats Gallagher, todays Style Icon.
